"If you're new to grilling and are feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices you have for grills, start with this one. ![]() "The best thing about this grill in particular is that it’s excellent for beginners," says Michael East, a Weber Kettle fan and BBQ writer of Griddle King. There’s a reason lots of old hands in this sub still use theirs sometimes, they’re a darn good, flexible grill. The Weber Kettle is the world's most popular charcoal grill, and for excellent reasons-it's simple to use, amazingly versatile, and very dependable. But for daily use feeding 3-4 of us I love the thing. I have the 22” and I had to section my thanksgiving day bird and cook the legs separately, I wouldn’t mind some more real estate. My only advice might be if you want to do bigger cuts or feed a crowd, get the bigger model. But 100% comes down to whether you want to learn heat and smoke control or push a button and walk away. I’d say they’re more ideal if you want to also use it as a grill. You can hit higher temps with the kettle (without risk of fire… traeger) and get more smoke flavor than a pellet. There are myriad accessories for these things, and there’s more I’d like to add eventually. $140 ish for the premium kettle, $50 or 60 on a slow n seat deluxe on sale, another $70ish for a 4 probe wifi thermometer on sale and I love the setup, well within your price range. FYI my local Home Depot had a decent discount on their display models, otherwise I would’ve gone used eventually but it’s nice to have a brand new one that isn’t already starting to rot. I’m always cooking something and I’ve used friends smokers before but finally bought my own end of summer. I think the kettle is a good learning tool, that’s how I’m using mine. The temp controller will die and be replaced long before I need a new grill or smoker. (I may actually still have these in 20 years, my buddy with the Traeger, almost certainly won't.) They're that beautiful enameled metal that never rusts, cleans up easily, and with just a little bit of care will last 20+ years. soooo I'm not sure wifi is a feature my grill needs.)īoth my kettle and my wsm are top quality Weber products though. he loves it, and he can start his grill with his phone (my grill never needs to be patched on Thanksgiving though. I've got a friend who bought one of the near the top of the line Traegers and is in the hole like $1600. That's enough for a mid tier or lower high end Traeger probably.īBQ IQ - $129 (was a gift, so free to me)īut that's $850ish, so that gets you into the nicer pellet grills, but not into the top end by any stretch. I've got a 26" kettle, and a 22" WSM with a BBQ IQ Temp controller. (I clean it when I use it, and I hose it down a few times a year, but it doesn't get white glove treatment by any stretch of the imagination) Can you do that with a budget pellet grill, and expect it to be in perfect working order in 4 years?) I've had a 26" kettle sitting uncovered on my covered porch mostly in the elements for 4+ years, and it's in perfect working order with no rust or issues. You're sacrificing build quality on the pellet grill, whereas the kettle is a dead simple design that's easy to fix and get replacement parts for, and while it's not cheap in build quality, it is cheap in price. Where as you could be getting a 22" kettle, a couple accessories, and a temp controller. At the upper limit of your budget you're getting an entry level pellet grill. Plenty of options features to choose from.Īlso something to consider. You can just use the kettle for all of your grilling needs, and when you want to do low and slow, but you don't want to monitor the cook minute by minute, you can attach the temp controller and get the set it and forget it convenience of a pellet.īBQ IQ (this is the one I have and have experience with, it's great I got the baby one the 110, it's pretty simple, the 120 and 130 have more features.) ![]()
